A Taste of Honey

Shelagh Delaney was the creator of the play A Taste of Honey. She was conceived in Broughton, Salford where she went to her three essential tutoring. Her desire was consistently to compose that is the reason at her initial age, she started composing. Tragically, the presentation of Delaney was reasonable just as found in her accomplishments in the early piece of her profession. She was not known for her composing that is the reason she centers around how to build up her composing aptitudes (McCully).Delaney was a slow developer as far as her improvement recorded as a hard copy abilities. Truth be told, when she began keeping in touch with her novel, A Taste of Honey, she understood that it will be smarter to change the novel into a play. At that point in the long run, the composed novel was changed into a play. The primary story of the play concentrated on an adolescent matured average workers young lady will not fit in with her horrid environmental factors. The play tells the watcher commonplace social issues of Britain like neediness. The play chief, Joan Littlewood, proposed that the play must be depicted by a basic or normal young lady which the executive based it from what the novel needs to confer to the audience.SUMMARYBefore setting off to the explanatory and profound conversation on the play A Taste of Honey, it is smarter to sum up first the play. The primary characters of the play are Josephine, Helen, Peter, The Boy, and Geoffrey. The Boy is a dark mariner who was enamored with Josephine yet didn't seen much in the play. Before he goes to the ocean were he expected to leave for a half year, he asked Josephine to wed him and offered her a ring as a hint of his adoration to her. From the play, The Boy impregnates Josephine.â  Helen is the mother of Josephine. Toward the start of the play, she and her girl had moved into a nippy and unclean level house. Josephine was the result of Helen’s brief connection to a man who had separated from her ev entually. The character of Helen was a solidified, moderately aged, common laborers alcoholic mother, while Peter is a youthful, rich man from London who was the motivation behind why Helen leaves her little girl to begin another life. What's more, the last principle character is Geoffrey, a gay who happened to be Josephine’s flat mate after she moved to somewhere else. Geoffrey is the person who take care Josephine when she is as yet pregnant (Delaney). The story is about the youthful of an ordinary young lady, Josephine, a youthful average workers young lady, is disregarded and pregnant when her cantina frequenting mother runs off to get hitched, and her sweetheart, a Black mariner, comes back to obligation gone forever, however she discovers help and fellowship with Geoffrey, a gay workmanship student. The phases of adolescenceThe motivation behind this paper is to have a profound examination or basic audit about the play and concentrating on the phases of adolescences of the principle character who is Josephine. We realize that we all will experience the phase of puberty. Guys and females have distinctive stage or advancement periods just to state they are going or experiencing on the adulthood. The youthfulness time frame is one of the battle and here and there disturbance as the pre-adult endeavors to build up an individual personality and accomplish a fruitful change from adolescence to adulthood (Estes). The above passage shows the genuine importance of adolosence period in a progressively specialized or logical way. In spite of the fact that this can be considered for this paper, yet I think what is progressively critical to investigate are the progressions that experiences a youthful as far as mental, mental, social and social changes. The mental, psychological and social changes related with adolescences are the most mind boggling and significant in any advancement period.Physical and sexual developments are reached during immaturity with young ladies tending to encounter both pubescence and development spray sooner than young men. Despite the fact that Josephine had a sexual connection with The Boy, this can't be connected uniquely with the sexual development of Josephine yet progressively profound which is the social and passionate state of Josephine when she chose to have sexual connection. This part will be talked about as we come the way.A ordinary pre-adulthood period will have grown progressively modern intellectual and relational abilities, try out grown-up jobs and practices and start to investigate instructive and word related open doors that will fundamentally impact future grown-up work life and financial status. On account of Josephine, her own quality was tried when she was left by her mom in return to the rich man.Josephine strived for herself as well as for her kid who is still in her belly. Josephine had figured out how to manage others so as to make due from the cruel condition. She initially met The Boy who had indicated friendship for Josephine. In immaturity period, there will come a period that we will be pulled in to the other gender and this what Josephine experienced in the center piece of the play. They both had a short illicit relationship. Because of estrangement and dejection, she chose to engage in sexual relations connection with The Boy. There are numerous reasons why an individual experiencing puberty period needs to connect with into sex. Some is for the physical and sexual development while others is on the grounds that they have some enthusiastic and social issues and felt that having intercourse will take out every one of these issues. On account of Josephine, I think she has further reason why she chose engage in sexual relations and not just for physical development (Savage).I think the principle motivation behind why Josephine had experienced a not all that typical immaturity stage is on the grounds that her irregular social and monetary status of their family. Single parent is one of the touchy issues in our general public since it concerns youngsters physical, mental, and enthusiastic turn of events. From the play, Josephine has single-parent households. We know for the way that our folks are the ones who have the significant duty in mindful, instructing and supporting the qualities required in our advancement as a kid and as adulthood (Belcastro). They are the person who will guide and remain behind us in each progression, choices, decisions also our falls. Without them, there must be two different ways where we will go, the correct way or an inappropriate way.If the character of the individual is frail, at that point the person will be effectively go to an inappropriate way of puberty period while if the individual doesn't being ruined by numerous physical, passionate and social issues, at that point the individual in question can defeat all these and will go to the privilege path. These issues that were spoken to from the play were all acceptable image of what the nation, Great Britain, is encountering when Delaney composed it. I think the creator need to underscore each issue to the watchers and disguise on the best way to manage these. The creator needs to confer or teach on what is truly occurring in their general public. This resembles a call to reaction on these issues on which she utilized the anomalous phase of immaturity.

Critical Reflection and Thinking on Clinical Supervision and Learning

Basic Reflection and Thinking on Clinical Supervision and Learning Presentation With the end goal of this paper the terms clinical chief and tutor will be utilized reciprocally as they are viewed as basically the equivalent in this specific situation. Study halls and course books instruct one to think about a patient whom numerous a period s/he will never truly experience as only here and there is such a great patient found in all actuality. One should recognize that one has to realize the hypothesis to have the option to apply the training when on the clinical territory. The scholastic side of ones learning ought not be belittled by putting all the significance in the down to earth encounters one experiences. All things considered the multifaceted nature of producing and placing ones information into genuine circumstances may just be comprehended through experiential practice. As Eraut (2009) expressed learning in college doesn't give indistinguishable taking in settings from the workplace. Nursing has truly obtained information through different settings, for example, customs, experimentation, look into, instinct, job displaying and mentorship, thinking and experience. Thusly experiential learning could well have a significant impact of the premise of authentic instruction whenever used and grew well. Anyway as will be talked about in this task experiential learning alone now and again is lacking as a reason for instruction in the complexities of learning by and by, clinical administrative jobs and being a skillful wellbeing proficient. 1. learning by and by Eraut (2007) longitudinal examination presumed that under the proper settings newcomers learned more at work than through conventional techniques. There is a requirement for adept learning openings and a steady domain to empower and learning in the supervisee. The Experiential learning cycle portrayed by Kolb (1984) incorporates four components: doing, reflecting, learning and applying that learning. The cycle at that point coordinates four different ways of knowing implied information which can be viewed as the supporting of accomplishing in ones work. One knows consequently and keeps on rehearsing naturally. Next is intelligent information which Mezirow (2000) portrays as including transparently thinking about and fundamentally reflecting ones own training. The last two are realizing that (propositional realizing) which appears from basic reflection and realizing how is the last section of the Kolbs cycle where one discovers capability. One may ponder whether the clinical working environment consistently improves positive conditions for experiential figuring out how to introduce real instruction. 1.1 The Clinical work environment Glen (2009: pg 498) alluding to the apprenticeship model that had been around since Florence Nightingale expresses that despite the fact that the model involves organized management along with periods for reflection the result was more planned for achieving the work assignments that on authentic reflection. The advantage of this model is that it gave recently qualified medical caretakers that had accomplished sufficient experience and seen as a skilful and experienced amateur in this way one could see the premise of instruction from experiential learning in this model. Anyway this model is not, at this point being used and may have been surrendered too soon (Mc Cormack, Kitson, Harvey, Rycroft-Malone, Titchen and Seers 2001). These days nurture instruction is run diversely however one can in any case recall the worry in the clinic prepared attendants when preparing for medical caretakers went into college level. One of the principle issues of concern was that nursing is a training calling so why the requirement for additional information to turn into an equipped specialist? Should medical attendants not be trained more in clinical practice and less in the study hall? Knowing and doing are not something very similar was voiced out numerous a period. This adds to the conviction of numerous that learning by and by is the premise of training. The way of life of the clinical practice will likewise impact ones experiential learning result. The state of affairs done here (which could be in a positive or negative disposition) at either the clinical experts (singular) level or at the association level or the two levels can impact ones fruitful final product (McCormack et al 2001). Then again various different factors, for example, the association one works in, nurture deficiencies, working in high patient sharpness, deficient clinical offices, patients having shorter lengths of remain, reluctance by the nursing staff to give clinical oversight and the a shortage of medical attendants in the clinical zone add to the test of getting certifiable instruction through experience. Supervisees should be outfitted with the fundamental aptitudes to break down issues from changing points of view. Experiential learning may introduce the premise of instruction if the correct test is given; that is inside the degree of the supervisees information and along these lines introducing an advantageous result. If not the experience may wind up being overpowering and as opposed to learning through thinking about a circumstance it could result rather in using in the end insufficient adapting strategies. One needs to misuse an encounter through appearance so as to sift through, fathom, give meaning and henceforth make fitting and proactive utilization of it. Experiential adapting along these lines needs to give the chance of creating intelligent and other conveyable learning abilities so as to advance the instruction supervisees need and to gain from the experience. 1.2 Critical reflection and thinking Chase and Wainwright (1994, p.84) call attention to that: Regardless of the time spent in a specific zone of training, rehearses that are without basis for activities are absolutely assignment or method orientated and need basic request. A few creators have underscored on the way that reflection is imperative in spanning the hypothesis and practice hole (Kolb, 1984, McCaugherty, 1992, Schã ¶n, 1987). Executing hypothesis into training requires experts to basically think about ones own training as well as on the ramifications of ones mediations. The writing has in addition featured reflection as basic when trying to consolidate hypothesis with training (Meretoja, Eriksson Leino-Kilpi, 2002). Lisko and ODell (2010) recognized that these days working in such a complex clinical condition requires one to utilize first rate basic reasoning, they likewise add that to offer such encounters for one to gain from and to consider has become fundamental this can be accomplished in the a wide range of experiential learning openings one experiences. In this way one notes that the nursing calling is slanting to recognize and energize intelligent practice and basic reasoning and that it additionally offers training as a matter of fact for the two bosses and their supervisees. Baltimore (2004) features that since ideal patient results will rely upon medical attendants activities, medical attendants need to completely understand a circumstance so as to basically might suspect. Benner (1984) stresses that recording of useful encounters and thinking about them is basic in the turn of events and expansion of hypothetical information. While Kolbs twofold information hypothesis (Kolb, 1984) delineates that one realizes things by having the option to destroy them combination with pondering them. One can see that it is acknowledged by the writing that reflection gives the chance to go over choices taken and survey just as assess ones learning so as to improve ones own training as well as whoever they administer. Of course does one working atmosphere with its time imperatives upgrade this? Is it conceivable to perform intelligent practice at whatever point required (Westberg Jason, 2001)? Is reflection not an intricate aptitude that is premise should be instructed in the study hall excessively so as to be satisfied practically speaking? Consequently can experiential learning alone give the capacity of how to reflect and considerably more fundamentally ponder ones encounters and eventually gain information from them? In collaboration with reflection goes along the requirement for criticism and instructing which are viewed as significant viewpoints in experiential learning while at the same time managing; for the supervisee as well as for the administrator. 2. Clinical oversight Cost (2004) features the motivations to why the job of a coach has appeared, enlightening that the students (supervisees) need to develop into an able and sure qualified medical attendant and performing practice keenness, great clinical abilities, mentalities and clinical strategies are best procured in the clinical practice condition. Being doled out to a clinical manager may furnish the supervisee with circumstances that may not or can't be depicted in study halls or course books. One may ponder about whether clinical directors have enough spirit and uplifting mentalities left in them to need to continue giving oversight in such frenzied workplaces and attendant deficiencies. Eraut et als (2007) study discoveries noticed that assigned coaches in nursing were either brilliant in giving a food or for all intents and purposes pointless. In this manner is Deweys proclamation directly in the last circumstances? Will experiential learning give equipped specialists in these circumstances? To turn into a decent tutor/boss one peruses tall records about the qualities required. Rowley (1999) offers a rundown of ideals a decent coach should hold including duty towards tutoring and its qualities, acknowledgment of one mentees paying little mind to ones individual convictions/likes/detests, viable showing characteristics, great relational abilities with the capacity to adjust to ones supervisees learning nature, and set the case of should be a consistent student and being idealistic towards ones mentees/supervisees. At that point Quinn (2007) portrays the humanistic characteristics essential, for example, understanding, being receptive, steady and comprehensive notwithstanding being sure towards students and a phenomenal administration way to deal with instruction esteems. Dark and Smith (2000) add a comical inclination to their rundown.

Nursing Shortage, An Essential Aspect Of The Nursing...

Due to the current worldwide nursing shortage, delegation is an essential aspect of the nursing profession. Delegation provides a way in which professionals can assign other employees tasks both to decrease workload and increase satisfactory patient care. However, many individuals within the healthcare system, including myself, do not fully understand the concept or importance of delegation. After doing my research, I have gained a new perspective of delegation, and some of the issues involved. There are many actions being taking to educate students as well as professionals of the true meaning of delegation and what all it entails. There are many misconceptions regarding delegation, and it is critical that all healthcare personnel†¦show more content†¦Among many of the misunderstandings of delegation, Standing and Anthony (2008) found that when unlicensed assistive personnel are asked to perform a task within their job description, that this is still considered delegation. I now know that when I am a nursing professional, I am still delegating even if the skill is within the individual’s scope of practice. One thing that I have learned in researching nursing delegation is that it is the responsibility of the registered nurse to assure that personnel are properly trained and fully understand the tasks in which they are being assigned. Research by Jones (1996) supports â€Å"A clear definition of the work to be done will reduce the chances of confusion and ensure that there is no doubt about who is responsible for specific jobs.† I assumed that a nursing manager or supervisor would be responsible for ensuring an unlicensed assistive personnel be properly trained, and though this is true, it is important for all registered nurses to assure proper training has been achieved for the safety of the patients. Better patient care will be delivered if the delegated tasks are performed safely and correctly. In addition, it is important to know what can and cannot be delegated based on an individual’s job description. Standing and Anthony (2008) found â€Å"Nurses are clearly accoun table and responsible for errors of planning, for example, delegating to UAP an activity that

Becoming A Third Year Architecture Student Essay - 1993 Words

Introduction: The Problem Being a third year architecture student who has just completed my Bachelor of Architecture Studies back in 2014, I was hit by the challenging reality upon my first internship experience in the architecture profession. Although I was equipped with the understanding of theories and concepts taught in the university, the work in the professional practice is complex, which inevitably demands various skills. These experiences had provided me with valuable insights as I had acquired various skills which were not taught in my degree. I was so taken a back that I needed to learn most of the things from scratch. In particular, the work assigned in codes building and drawing were completely new to me. Although the work was challenging, I managed to pick the skills up through the hands-on practice and research. The issues of concern is that school of architecture do not adequately preparing graduates to operate for the practical realities of working practice. School of architecture, appears to be preparing students for models of practice that are no longer in full accord with the current professional context (Nicol.D Pilling.S, 2000, p.6). But what is it about design education that is not supportive of the needs of professional practice (Nicol.D Pilling.S, 2000, p.6) ? Role of the United States Constitution Free Essays

Role of the United States Constitution The role of the constitution plays an important part of the everyday life in the United States. It is a part of every person’s life even if they do not realize it. It usually has impacted your life in the past or even at every moment in someone’s life. We will write a custom essay sample on Role of the United States Constitution or any similar topic only for you Order Now â€Å"Although the Constitution created a new federal government, it took a courageous, brilliant, and farseeing Supreme Court chief justice to help realize the framers’ vision. † (Microsoft, 2007) The Constitution itself provides that it may be amended to address social and economic changes. There are two main functions that the U. S. Constitution serves. One of main function is the three branches of the federal government which are judicial, legislative and executive. The second main function is to, â€Å"protect individual rights by limiting the government’s ability to restrict those rights. † (Cheeseman, 2007) Power is distributed throughout the branches in time. The executive branch is designated to provide the election of the president and vice president. Both presidents are elected by the Electoral College and not by popular vote like one would think. The legislative branch’s responsibility consists of the Senate and House of Representatives which together are called Congress. Lastly, there is the judicial branch which was created by establishing the Supreme Court. Checks and balances have been created so one branch does not get any more powerful than the others. The judicial branch has authority to examine the acts of the other two branches of government and determine if those acts are constitutional. The executive branch can enter into treaties with foreign governments only with the advice and consent of the Senate. The legislative branch is authorized to create federal courts and determine their jurisdiction and to enact statutes that change judicially made law. Certain checks and balances are built into the Constitution to ensure that no one branch of the federal government becomes too powerful. The Supremacy Clause is considered the supreme law of the land or the highest form of law in the American legal system. State and local laws that conflict with valid federal law are unconstitutional. Another main section of the constitution is the Commerce Clause which, â€Å"grants Congress the power to regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with Indian tribes. (Cheeseman, 2007) This was set in place mainly to foster the development of a national market and free trade among the states. The 10 amendments that are part of the Constitution are the bill of rights. These amendments basically guarantee rights to people and protect these rights from government that might try to get in the way. Over the years 17 amendments have been added with some being abolished slavery, prohibited discrimination, authorized the federa l income tax and given women the right to vote. Probably the most known amendment is freedom of speech which is defined as, â€Å"the concept of being able to speak freely without censorship. (Wikipedia, 2008) This is the one of the most important amendments because all other amendments would basically be meaningless without it. In Minnesota there was a state wide smoking ban that took effect on September 30, 2007. â€Å"The Minnesota law applies to bars, restaurants, and private clubs. † (Brunswick, 2007) This change in the law has affected some of the business in many bars. Recently there have been a few bars that have found a â€Å"loophole† in the Freedom to Breathe Act. The loophole basically states that smoking is allowing in public places as long as there is a theater performance. Mark Benjamin, an attorney from Cambridge who initiated the event, said, â€Å"These people are actors and this is the stage. † (Mille Lacs Messenger, 2008) All the patrons in the bar are considered actors and their cigarette is a prop which is how the loophole works. The smoking ban is an example of how a Constitutional right affects a business and how the legal system is used with respect to recognizing or protecting that right. Yes, the smoking ban might be hurting some bars that are mainly serving beverages, but the rights are being protected by letting people smoke freely everywhere else other than bars, restaurants, and private clubs. Even though many states are starting to ban smoking like Minnesota, more than likely it will never come down to where smoking is completely banned. References Brunswick, M. (2007, September 30). Perverted Patriotism essays

Perverted Patriotism essays Describe how patriotism is perverted in After the First Death. Of all ennobling sentiments, patriotism is probably the most easily manipulated. It can give a powerful expression to the best of a nations character: commitment to principle, strength and devotion. Patriotism can be great, but when taken too far innocence becomes evil. Patriotism can be described as the devotion to the welfare of ones country. In the novel After the First Death by Robert Cormier patriotism is perverted and used as an excuse by both opposing sides: the terrorists (Miro, Artkin, Antibbe, Stroll and Sedeete) and the secret organisation, Inner Delta. The terrorists justify their ruthless acts by excusing themselves as freedom fighters for their country. The head of Inner Delta, General Marchand or assumed identity General Rufus L Briggs takes patriotism to such extremes that he willingly sacrifices his son in order to defeat the terrorists. Thus, it can be said both sides value patriotism over life itself. Inner Delta is a secret government military organisation, which controls and maintains security for the benefit of the American citizens. It is not fully specified what the agency does, but it can be gathered that it is a type of intelligence organisation similar to the Australian equivalent ASIO. The head of this organisation, General Marchand takes patriotism to his heart. He believes the only thing worth living for is ones country. General Marchand perverts patriotism in After the First Death due to past events that have had a deep impact on him and affected him greatly. His patriotic ways came from the death of a close friend during WWII. Caught up in the fever of patriotism Mark Marchand joined the army along with his friend Jack Harkness towards the end of 1941. Jack died in battle while fighting overseas with Marchand. Mark vowed over his friends grave that he had not died in vain. This ...

A railway utility building in Basel, Switzerland called Signal Box has an exterior cladding of copper strips that are twisted at certain places to admit daylight. Carter Brown, commented, One is hard put to think of any architects in history that have addressed the integument of architecture with greater imagination and virtuosity. Ada Louise Huxtable, architecture critic and member of the jury, commented further about Herzog and de Meuron, They refine the traditions of modernism to elemental simplicity, while transforming materials and surfaces through the exploration of new treatments and techniques. Another juror, Carlos Jimenez from Houston who is professor of architecture at Rice University, said, One of the most compelling aspects of work by Herzog and de Meuron is their capacity to astonish. And from juror Jorge Silvetti, who chairs the Department of Architecture, Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, ...all of their work maintains throughout, the stable qualities that have always been associated with the best Swiss architecture: conceptual precision, formal clarity, economy of means and pristine detailing and craftsmanship.

Obesity Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Obesity - Essay Example At the same time, demands of profession and education require the individual to be less-involved in quality food preparation in this age group with less free time available in contemporary society to seek appropriate exercise and fitness options. It is because of the lifestyles and risks in this age group that a health promotion activity to promote better eating and exercise is being proposed. The Research Findings The Centers for Disease Control (2012) indicates that approximately 25 percent of women between 20 and 30 are considered obese. Though this is significantly lower than other age groups with higher prevalence of obesity, it should be considered that the 20-30 year old age group in society is one of the lowest in terms of total national population percentages. Between 2009 and 2010, there was no reduction in obesity ratios in women, which illustrates that existing health promotion campaigns and other obesity initiatives are not meeting with the psycho-social characteristics prevalent with young females. Of this entire female age group, the majority of obese women are non-Hispanic black females, indicating that this particular ethnic sub-group of 20-30 year old women have unique lifestyle characteristics that contribute to obesity growth. Women between the ages of 20 and 30 are also in the population category that has the fastest increases in obesity compared to the rest of the national population. A study involving 555 women between 20 and 34 found that 63 percent of these women were obese as measured by the World Health Organization body mass index testing (Parrish, 2010). This study supports a finding which has identified that the type of foods purchased is strongly linked to income levels and the choices that women select related to their perceptions of health benefits. It is commonly known that younger females in this age category maintain unequal pay to their younger male peers in the professional organization and many are under-employed. Thus, it becomes more cost-effective for women between 20 and 30 to select cheaper food options congruent to their lower incomes in this particular age bracket. Contributions to the Program The CDC statistics illustrating that 25 percent of women between 20 and 30 being obese contributes highly to this program intention. By understanding just how many women are affected by obesity, it can help select an appropriate target audience and how best to establish an exercise routine that is effective based on lifestyle. The study involving such a high percentage of women being obese by Parrish (2010) acknowledges that obesity rates are significantly higher when measured against body mass index. Further, the linkage between incomes can provide new health imperatives to reduce this rapid phenomenon of weight gain and provide cost-effective solutions that are in-line with budget restraints for the younger female between 20 and 30. The goal of the program is to provide comprehensive knowledge about ex ercise and health lifestyles, which also includes food selections and preparation. It would be fundamentally defeating to the program to not identify the specific ethnic profiles and frequency of obesity within this group before selecting an appropriate strategy for combating this problem and improving young female health

australia Essay -- essays research papers

*Geography* Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. It lies in the Southern Hemisphere between 11 ° and 44 ° south latitude and 113 ° and 154 ° east longitude. The entire area of land is about the same size as the continental United States, or about one and a half times the size of Europe. The mainland of Australia has an area of 2,967,909 square miles. The country is divided into six states: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia. The geological activity that created the country’s mountains, plains, and rivers ceased millions of years ago. Earthquakes are very rare and the last volcanic eruption occurred more than 5,000 years ago. The highest mountain in Australia, Mount Kosciusko, is only 7,310 feet above sea level. *Climate*   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Australia experiences a wide variety of climates. In the north, the continent’s immense interior gives way to hot, wet monsoonal tropical regions. The southeast coast, where most of Australia’s population lives, is cooler and drier. The southwest is very hot and dry in the summer, but milder and wetter in the winter. The climate is very similar to the Mediterranean countries of Europe, or to California. Summer temperatures in Australia can soar over 104 °, but the costal regions are cooler due to offshore breezes. Because of the heat and lack of rain, bushfires rage through the tinder-dry landscape, destroying half a million acres of forest and grassland every year.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The hot temperatures of the inland coupled with the lack of rain mean that 70% of Australia receives less than 20 inches of rain a year, making it the world’s driest continent. Farming is difficult in these areas, but not impossible, thanks to artesian water and the construction of many irrigation schemes. *People*   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The first inhabitants were people belonging to the Australoid group, who probably originated from Southeast Asia. These people traveled to the Australian continent about 40,000 years ago. A short while later, Aborigines landed in canoes and rafts on the north coast of Australia and then moved southward across the rest of the continent. Aborigines were nomads living in family clans, each with its own territory where it could camp, hunt, and fish. The Aborigines brought two useful items from their original homela... ...sp;  Ã‚  Ã‚  The exchange rate of a US dollar to an Australian dollar is as follows: 1 US dollar = 1.94 Australian dollars. *Economy*   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Australia has a prosperous Western-style capitalist economy, with a per capita GDP at the level of the four dominant West European economies. Rich in nature resources, Australia is a major exporter of agricultural products, minerals, metals, and fossil fuels. Commodities account for 57% of the value of total exports, so that a downturn in world commodity prices can have a big impact on the economy. The government is pushing for increases exports of manufactured goods, but competition in international markets continues to be severe. While Australia has suffered from the low growth and high unemployment characterizing the OECD countries in the early 1990s and during the recent financial problems in East Asia, the economy had expanded at a solid 4% annual growth pace in the last five years. Growth in 2002 will depend on key international commodity prices, the extent of recovery in nearby Asian economies, and the strength of US and European markets.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚

The Rio Olympics 2016

Maxwell Britton October 11, 2012 Anth 210 Writing Assignment 1 Olympics Games 2016 The excitement that the city of Rio experimented upon the announcement of hosting the 2016 Olympic games appears to have been short lived. The descent of excitement began once drug traffickers shot down a police helicopter. The government responded by heightening the crackdown on the city slums of the favelas. As a result many of the favelas in Rio are now under police control (Jazeera). The questions we are now asked is if the coming Olympics provided the motive for the increased importance that have been placed on controlling drug trafficking while also disguising as a strategy and justification to clean up the favelas of Rio? Or are the Olympics irrelevant and merely a beneficiary of the crackdown? It seems to me that the upcoming events in which the city of Rio have been presented with have become overwhelming. The Olympics are a very sacred event to host and having the honor to do such is a major r esponsibility (Watson). With this I do believe that the Olympics are the primary motive for the government’s actions. The Olympics routinely bring hundreds of thousands of tourists to the host city and this is something that the city of Rio wants to take advantage of in showing off their city to the world (Watson). This is why I believe the government has decided to intensify their police presence in the favelas as a tactic to clean up and make their city more appealing. The outcome of this has left thousands of individuals killed or imprisoned by the government. The favelas are where the majority of drug trafficking takes place as many times they are controlled and run by the gangs. As a solution the military police have gone in and taken over, resulting in thousands of deaths. It’s reported by the Human Rights Watch that the police of Rio and Sao Paolo have killed over 11,000 people since 2003.When a reporter discussed these findings by the Human Rights Watch with the head of Rio security; Jose Beltrame, the findings weren’t denied and instead attributed to the difficulties faced by the police of Rio. However, when asked about the Human Rights Activists who claim there are additional killings by the police he was quick to respond. According to Beltrame these reports are always similar and are preconceived opinions that are not based on reason, as they don’t understand the reality of Rio.The actuality, he explains, is there are areas in Rio that are dominated by criminal gangs equipped with assault rifles that the police are facing (Jazeera). Although it’s too difficult to determine which side is right, it is clear that too many lives are being taken. In conclusion I think it’s a positive thing for the city to put effort into controlling drug trafficking and also something that has been long due. However, it appears that many innocent individuals are being affected by these government actions and in some cases even been killed.I think the government needs to take a strong look at the approach they have taken and determine if this is benefiting their city in the long run or it is a short-term solution for the Olympics. The Song of Roland and Christianity - 1483 Words

Song of Roland and Christianity The Song of Roland is indeed a Christian poem. Of this, there is no question. However, it is a medieval version of Christianity that it presents, and not one that would be something familiar to the early Christians or to the actual followers of Jesus of Nazareth. By the time the Song of Roland was written, Christianity had changed drastically from its early days. Instead of being a mild, humble, and peaceful group of persecuted people who were outside the norms of society (Pearson 2009, 221), Christianity had become powerful. It had become accepted as the official religion of most of Europe, and the idea to convert others by force had become an attractive one. The people of the Middle Ages took Jesuss command to go out and become fishers of men (meaning to bring the word of God and the message of Jesus to whoever they could) to mean to go out and forcibly capture those men and make them convert or die. Christianity had become more violent than the religion of peace that it was when it began. The Song of Roland reflects this. If there is one thing the Song of Roland is, it is a product of its times. It was written around the time of the first Crusade, when the Christian people of Europe were eager to go out and reclaim the lands where Jesus had lived and secure them for Christianity. The Middle East, where Jesus had lived, was ruled by Muslims at this time, and that was just not acceptable to European Christians. Music Censorship Is Not Possible Without The Color Red And...

This statement is very impactful in how he uses the example of painting the American flag, it’s not possible without the color red and for artists to not be able to write songs using their past experiences that isn’t quite possible either. Another limitation of music censorship is that lyrics are poetry and are filled with double meanings so what may be obscene to one person may be perfectly acceptable to another. John Denver testified at the 1985 hearing of the PMRC stating that his song â€Å"Rocky Mountain High†, which had previously been banned on many radio stations thinking it was about drugs, was actually about the beauty of the nature and the mountains in Colorado (Rabkin). Another example of lyrics with double meanings is the song†¦show more content†¦Ten to thirty percent of the students gave the â€Å"correct† interpretations of the songs while twenty to sixty percent gave incorrect or vague responses. The remainder of students refus ed to answer (Nuzum 64). The difference in interpretations between adults and teens can be shown through this study and there is a reason for the difference. Interpretations can be caused by the fact that one’s understanding is limited to their knowledge on the topic. Greenfield conducted a study on four different age groups: fourth, eighth, and twelfth graders and college students. Two songs, â€Å"Born in the USA† by Bruce Springsteen and â€Å"Like a Virgin† by Madonna, were played for the participants. Following each song they were asked to fill out a questionnaire. The questions asked about their comprehension of both specific words in the lyrics and about the overall meaning. The results for the understanding of Bruce Springsteen’s song was low. After hearing the song entirely and seeing certain excerpts on the questionnaire sixty percent of the overall sample couldn’t answer the questions regarding song content. Contrary to the title and refrain, the song is about the loss of hope and resentment. The percentage of participants who understood the song’s actual themes were very low. Not one of the fourth graders could recognize the real theme, while only thirty percent of eighth graders, forty percent of twelfth

Whitbread Plc SWOT Analysis Free Essays

Abstract: An analysis of the FTSE 100 company Whitbread Plc, utilising the SWOT tool as a framework to investigate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that the company faces in relation to its position within the Leisure industry. Drawing from an internal perspective, the SWOT analysis evaluates the company’s operation in both its national and international domains. Introduction: The following essay comprises an analysis of Whitbread Plc, a company operating within the Leisure and Hospitality sector, presently ranked 85th on the FTSE 100 index (Source: etf. We will write a custom essay sample on Whitbread Plc SWOT Analysis or any similar topic only for you Order Now db.com). With engagements in the hotels, restaurants and coffee shop businesses, its portfolio of subsidiary companies includes the market leading brands Premier Inn and Costa Coffee, alongside a range of restaurant chains comprising Beefeater Grill, Brewers Fayre, Table Table and Taybarns. Analysis will centre around an investigation of Whitbread Plc’s internal strengths and weaknesses, examining the presence of opportunities and threats that stand to prepare or hinder its progress within the leisure industry. This theme will be examined both within the context of both its national and international operations. The current operating environment that all brands falling under the Whitbread corporate umbrella face is undoubtedly a challenging one, owing to increased cautiousness on the part of consumers in light of an unstable economic climate. This is particularly the case with discretionary expenditure on leisure and non essential services, for which the company firmly caters. However, recent financial figures suggest robust performances across the board; the company share price in the 12 months to April 2012 has risen by 6.56 per cent (source ft.com), reaching a 52 week peak of 1889 pence per share on 28th March 2012 (Appendix 1). In line with this, the company are expected to announce a 15 per cent increase in underlying pre-tax profits of ?314.2 million when their annual report is published on 26th April 2012 (Source business.scotsmann.com). Further, the trend in recent years has been to peruse expansion both on the UK and international scenes. Costa Coffee has seen notable growth, with over 1600 stores worldwide; up from just 346 in 2003/04 (Appendix 2). It is now the leading UK coffee chain (Whitbread annual reports and accounts 2010/11). Similarly, Premier Inn has grown to 590 hotels throughout the UK and is targeting aggressive expansion into Dubai and India. It appears that cautious optimism has been the basis for a continued strategy of growth in a market charged with both opportunities and threats for what is an established and experienced operator. Focussing on the company’s internal environment, what follows is a brief SWOT analysis, detailing the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats within its national and international markets: Whitbread Plc SWOT Analysis Strengths: Whitbread are in the position of owning a strong brand portfolio. Premier Inn and Costa are market leading performers (Appendix 3), where as their restaurant arm is expected to announce a 1.9 percent increase in total sales for the year ending April 2011. (Source scotsman.com) Further, the parent company is well established with many years experience in the brewery industry, before recently changing tack to focus on hospitality and restaurants. Recent managerial board moves in April 2012 have seen the well regarded company finance director, Chris Rogers, take control of the Costa business. (The Telegraph 03 Apr 12) This can perhaps be interpreted as a means of ensuring the future stability of a high performing brand. Weaknesses: Although the Costa brand has been very much the ‘Rising Star’ of Whitbread’s brand portfolio over the past 10 years, there is perhaps a perception that the underlying reason for the company’s rapid expansion has been based on a fad, subject to changing customer tastes and therefore lacking in longevity. Being situated at the luxury end of the coffee chain spectrum, Costa is also at risk of overpricing its products; perhaps a door through which competitor coffee chains can leverage some market share during a period of recession. Seeing as Whitbread has traditionally managed a domestic portfolio, many of its brands remain untested outside of the UK market, with only a small number of Premier Inn and Costa outlets competing in the international marketplace. There remains a lack of necessary brand awareness in what is already a very saturated international leisure marketplace. Opportunities: On the domestic scene, with many traditional high street retailers facing store cutbacks or even complete closure, there exist strong opportunities to capitalise on the availability of prime high street retail space. There are further opportunities to become more flexible with the pricing structures employed in the Premier Inn chain, whereby the current CEO Andy Harrison has mooted plans to employ a ‘Dynamic Pricing Model’ which aims to maximise occupancy rates in each of its hotels. (Whitbread Interim Results Presentation 2011/12). This could prove particularly valuable at a time when UK residents are increasingly choosing domestic holidays over foreign travel. Viewing from an international perspective, there remains scope for considerable expansion, as is currently being undertaken with moves into Dubai and India, alongside Costa’s recent acquisition of Poland’s biggest chain, ‘ Coffeeheavan’ for ?32m in 2009 (telegraph.co.uk/finance). The sp ectre of London 2012 is perhaps the most tangible short-term prospect, with many chances to capitalise on tourist expenditure over the Gamestime period. Threats: In the Annual Report and Accounts for 2010/11, Whitbread chairman Anthony Habgood wrote, â€Å"Over the next twelve months the focus will be on strengthening our value propositions, controlling costs and accelerating our expansion.† This intention to control capital expenditure will indeed need to be followed through rigidly, in order for expansion plans to progress without any financial backlash. With the global economic environment remaining turbulent, there remains a sizable degree of uncertainty in the process of expanding into new markets. The increasing frequency of news articles based in the instability of world markets, with current headlines reading ‘FTSE Tumbles Amid Political Doubt’ (The Press Association – 23.04.12) adds testament to this. Further recent speculationsuggests the Costa arm may be demerged from Whitbread, owing to its viability as an independent entity (The Independent, 22.04.12). This effects of move are an unknown in terms of it s outcome on Whitbread’s stability. Conclusion: Approaching the theme of strengths and weaknesses from a national and international perspective, this essay has outlined the balance of opportunities and threats as they affect Whitbread Plc, using the SWOT tool to provide a structured investigation into the environment in which the company operates. It can be seen that whilst Whitbread possess the attributes of a strong brand portfolio containing highly recognisable national companies, there is considerable reason for future optimism of plans for expansion and growth to be tempered by the reality of an unstable global economic climate and current lack of presence on the international scene. Aviation Essay Research Paper The airline industry free essay sample

Aviation Essay, Research Paper The air hose industry has been capable of intense monetary value competition since it was deregulated, and the consequence has been a figure of new bearers which specialize in regional service and no-frills operations. These bearers typically purchase older aircraft and frequently operate outside the industry-wide computerized reserves system. In exchange for these incommodiousnesss, riders receive low menus relative to the industry as a whole. This research examines two low menu air bearers, ValuJet and Southwest Airlines. By look intoing these air bearers, we can better understand the economic impacts of monetary value versus service in the air hose industry as a whole, every bit good as, the impacts on rider and investor assurance. Until 1978, air conveyance rates were approved by the authorities, which meant that monetary value was non a primary competitory factor. Alternatively, air hoses would vie on service and image. The air hose industry was dominated by giants ( American, United, TWA ) which offered countrywide and some international service, and by regional bearers, such as Southwest, which offered short trips between airdromes non served by the subjects. Deregulation of the air hose industry brought approximately in 1978 introduced a state of affairs in which the national and regional bearers were all of a sudden able to vie in an environment that resembled a free market. Rate agendas were lifted, monetary value repair was eliminated and route direction was removed. The chief factors that affected whether an air hose could function a peculiar metropolis was whether or non that metropolis had adequate Gatess for the new bearer, and whether the bearer was able to afford to buy them. Companies such as Southwest recognized possible for low menus, and began constructing a niche for themselves by offering low menus with tantamount low degrees of service. Southwest s success gave rise to a new coevals of low menu air hoses, with ValuJet come ining the market in the early 1990 s. Unfortunately, ValuJet suffered a twine of accidents which brought the hereafter of this air bearer into inquiry. ValuJet is a low-cost air hose that offers cheap tickets for regional travel. Based in Atlanta, the air hose serves the Southeastern United States and competes with Continental Airlines every bit good as with other little regional bearers. It serves 31 metropoliss chiefly in the southeasterly United States. The air hose began its service with flights to Tampa and Orlando from Atlanta in 1993. The no-frills scheme paid off for the fledgeling air hose, which posted half once more as many gross rider stat mis in April 1996 as it did in April 1995. However, the company announced that it was decelerating the enlargement of its services, voluntarily, at the same clip that it posted this impressive gross grade ( Cole A ; Pasztor, 1996, p. A6 ) . Possibly due to overexpansion or to hapless fortune, Valujet experienced a series of bad lucks in its short history. In January 1994, a DC-9 skidded off a track in Washington which resulted in the full airdrome being shut down. In June 1995, a ValuJet flight went through an exigency emptying after an engine failed and shrapnel flew into the cabin. Extra incidents, including one where the landing cogwheel collapsed after a peculiarly forceful landing, led the FAA to get down an intense reappraisal of ValuJet in February 1996. This reappraisal found that ValuJet was in conformity with FAA ordinances, but cited concern about pilot preparation and aircraft care ( Larson, 1996, p.30 ) . In May 1996, Valujet flight 592 crashed in the Everglades, killing all aboard and ensuing in a closure of the bearer for several months. When ValuJet began winging once more, it did so with a decreased agenda, and considerable guess about whether the company will be able to go on operations long-run. The company is besides involved in judicial proceeding ensuing from the clang, and the long-run chances for the company are questionable. The undermentioned chart identifies key runing statistics for Southwest ( place stat mis are in 1000000s, cost factors are in cents ) ( Shammas, 1996, p. 5541P ) : 1995 1994 1993 Gross Passenger Miles ( RPM ) 2,624 941 44 Available Seat Miles ( ASM ) 3,813 1,471 63 Load Factor 68.8 % 64.0 % 69.7 % Gross per RPM 13.4 13.8 13.1 Cost per ASM 6.8 6.8 9.8 Because Southwest s flights are by and large an hr or lupus erythematosus in length, the air hose saves money by non holding to function repasts. It has a broad work regulation agreement with its brotherhoods, so productiveness is high, and overall costs are low. For illustration, Southwest gets 672 hours per twelvemonth on norm from pilots versus 371 for American Airlines pilots, and 60 per centum more rider stat mis per flight attender ( Levinson, 1993, p. 34 ) . These figures enable the company to recognize net incomes during old ages in which the industry as a whole was enduring. The undermentioned chart identifies key runing statistics for Southwest ( place stat mis are in one million millions, cost factors are in cents ) ( Klein, 1996, p. 2077 ) : 1995 1994 1993 Gross Passenger Miles ( RPM ) 23.33 21.61 18.83 Available Seat Miles ( ASM ) 36.18 32.12 27.51 Gross per RPM 11.83 11.56 11.77 Cost per ASM 7.07 7.08 7.25 In add-on, the company has a 70 per centum norm load factor in an indu stry that averages 63 per centum, and operating costs per rider stat mi are 22 per centum less than industry norm. It has one of the youngest fleets in the industry ( 6.9 old ages compared with an industry norm of 12.9 in 1992 ) , and the best on-time and luggage handling records in 1992 ( Gold, 1993, p. 29 ) . Each of these factors contributes to the company s fiscal and selling success. Southwest s success has come about because it is supplying a merchandise that the market wants, no-frills regional air travel, at a monetary value that is attractive. Despite its no-frills orientation, the company maintains strong client service satisfaction and high degrees of client service, promoting repetition concern. When the air hose enters a new market, such as Baltimore, its menus are every bit much as 85 per centum less than those of its higher-priced rivals, pulling riders rapidly and coercing the competition to either fit the monetary value or lose market portion. In its mark markets, Southwest has positioned itself to even vie favourably with going by auto ( Thorpe, 1996, p. 262 ) . Southwest s success has non been without job, and the company has once more demonstrated an ability to happen originative solutions to those jobs. For illustration, the company has traditionally expanded its 737 fleet by adding older aircraft available at price reductions ( sometimes every bit much as 30 per centum ) ( Kripanlani, 1992, p. 20 ) . Since the company s ability to come in new markets is determined in portion by the size of its fleet, and since the company is committed to remaining with homogeneous fleet of 737s, it runs the hazard of stoping up with a big figure of older aircraft that it no longer needed ( depending on the market ) , or that do non run into new environmental criterions. Southwest solved this job by get downing a lease-back plan in 1988. Under the plan, Southwest sells some of its older 737s, so leases them back for its ain usage. As of the beginning of 1992, the company had done this with more than half of the Boeing 737-200 aircraft that it operated ( Brown, 1992, p.57 ) . This plan enables the company to let go of aircraft that it no longer needs or that no longer run into the rigorous new environmental criterions. At the same clip, the company can modify its staying 737-200s in order to do them compatible with noise and pollution ordinances if it needs the capacity. The company s stock has split three times since 1990, and its price-earnings ratio is a healthy 13.1 per centum. Its burden factor is good within the industry norm of 67 per centum ( Sanborn, 1996, p. 251 ) , and the company s committedness low menus and its safety record should assist it keep good public presentation even in visible radiation of the ValuJet clang ( which brought increased attending to all low menu bearers ) . The clang of Flight 592 has brought increased examination to ValuJet ( and to low-fare bearers in general ) , and the long-run consequence on ValuJet is non yet known. The stock, which had two, two-for-one splits in 1995 and which peaked at more than 30 dollars per portion in late 1995, has plummeted to below 12 dollars per portion in late 1996. Investors with high tolerance of hazard might see the stock at this low degree, and the company might be a coup detat mark in the hereafter as other bearers seek its paths. However, the company s aging aircraft fleet would non be an plus to most bearers, and it is ill-defined whether shareholders would recognize a sensible net income, even at today s low monetary values. The mentality for Southwest is well brighter than for ValuJet. The company has one of the highest safety records in the industry, and the company has besides benefited from higher ticket monetary values and increased rider traffic. The recent reinstatement of the federal excise revenue enhancement is non expected to hold a negative consequence on Southwest demand since it has indicated it will increase menus in merely 20 per centum of its markets, but this will impact profitableness. The company s scheme is to do up the difference of lower gross with increased demand through its lower menus ( Thorpe, 1996, p. 262 ) . The air hose industry has become one of the most competitory sections of our economic system. The economic worlds of operation costs versus passenger demand for cost-efficient travel has everlastingly changed the face of the travel industry. After deregulating in 1978, the air hose industry was forced to abandon its service-oriented doctrine and see the competitory force per unit areas since they affected the assorted companies bottom line. Price had all of a sudden become the benchmark in the air hose industry. Companies such as Southwest and ValuJet recognized the potency for low menus with commensurably low degrees of service. With the altering paradigms in the air hose industry comes hazard, non merely to the person air hoses but besides the populace in general. At what point do the economic force per unit areas of doing a net income for the air hoses affect rider safety? If the tendency toward more air hose catastrophes continues and those accidents can be attributed to cost-cutting steps, certainly Congress will step in. The air hose industry must be disciplined in its attack to work outing the economic force per unit areas, while, at the same clip stay focused on safety issues. If the air hose industry is to last and give the consumer picks, rider assurance can non be sacrificed for the interest of the bottom line!
